Looking for a getaway on horseback in the Var on the French riviera? Explore the eastern part of the Var on the Côte d'Azur and let yourself be enchanted by the Estérel massif, between Saint-Raphaël, Fréjus and Puget sur Argens, or the Provençal hinterland in Callian within the Fondurane reserve.
We have selected for you several equestrian excursions offered by three ranches in the South region, specialized in guiding horseback rides through the forests of the Est Var. The adventure begins through the Estérel massif or in the Pays de Fayence.
The Ranch Les 3 Fers offers outings all year round for beginners, following a forest trail with stops at viewpoints overlooking the Mediterranean.
This ranch also provides children’s lessons for half-days or during school holidays.
The Ranch My Little Western Pony offers several pony or horse rides suitable for children from 4 years old. The “family ride” is ideal for families, to introduce your little ones to horseback riding.
This ranch also organizes sunset rides or the “Échappée Belles” ride, which lasts 2h30. The view of the sea or the Rocher de Roquebrune gives these outings an unusual dimension.
Exclusive promotional rates for all these excursions on our site!
Whether departing from Saint-Raphaël or Puget sur Argens near Fréjus, discover the Estérel Massif. Of volcanic origin, it extends from the Côte d’Azur coastline in the eastern Var to the border with the Alpes Maritimes. Its typical red rock formations, covered with pines and oaks, create a striking contrast with the blue of the Mediterranean. Part of the massif is a protected area crisscrossed by trails suitable for horseback riding, offering unique panoramas of the Est Var.
You won’t be able to access the heart of the massif on horseback, as it’s accessible by car and on foot, but during your rides, you’ll get a great overview of its expanse, particularly when you pause at panoramic viewpoints over its peaks and the Rocher de Roquebrune.
Le Haras des Villars welcomes you year-round to help you discover the Provençal forests around its ranch. With rides lasting from 1 hour up to half a day, go with family or friends on one of these unforgettable excursions.
Preparation time is scheduled before each outing so you can get acquainted with the horses.
Discover the Fondurane reserve in the heart of the Pays de Fayence, located near the ranch. A true sanctuary of biodiversity, this protected area stretches around Lake Saint-Cassien and is home to remarkable wildlife and flora, including many species of migratory birds. Following the trails, you will overlook Lake Saint Cassien and be fully immersed in nature—an authentic experience in the Est Var.
Duration of the outing: On our site, you can choose the formula you prefer—1 or 2 hours, or a half-day.
However, note that if you’re a beginner, it’s best to start with a one-hour ride on a route designed to help you feel comfortable with your horse or pony.
Required skill level: Each activity page indicates the minimum age for the ride. The one-hour rides are accessible from the age of 4. The half-day rides are generally more suitable for sporty individuals (even beginners) or those who have ridden before.
If you have an excellent riding level and want a more challenging route, you can request a private discovery ride (note that an additional budget may be required).
Supervision: All instructors are state-certified and authorized to supervise equestrian outings.
Equipment: Wearing a riding helmet is mandatory, and it’s provided. Plan to wear comfortable clothing with long pants and closed-toe shoes.
A little tip: avoid wearing black, especially in summer ;)
How to book: Choose one of the activities featured on this page, and submit a request on our site. The request is instantly sent to the provider, who will confirm your reservation quickly (usually within a few hours). If, unfortunately, the chosen date is fully booked, the provider will contact you to suggest another date (depending on your availability). No payment is processed until the provider has confirmed your request.
Our site is 100% local (we are based in Saint-Raphaël), with no booking fees (we even offer exclusive promotions on some outings!), and we have tested the activities ourselves, so we know what we’re talking about!
Our tips for these activities:
• If you have the choice, opt for morning or late-afternoon rides to avoid the high summer temperatures.
• Respect the environment: Keep your trash with you, stay on marked trails, and do not disturb local wildlife.
• Listen to instructions: Follow your guide’s advice for your safety and that of the horse (the horses are used to these rides; they know what to do; with just a few rules to move forward and steer, the outing is easily accessible).
• Stay hydrated: Bring enough water, especially if you’ll be out for several hours.
• Before departing: help prepare the horses with your guide and get to know them. For children, grooming the horses and learning the basics is sometimes included.

For a horseback ride on French Riviera, it’s important to dress comfortably and appropriately for riding. Here are some tips on what to wear:
• Long pants: Opt for long, comfortable pants—preferably fitted to avoid getting caught in the stirrups. Riding pants or leggings are often the best options.
• Fitted tops: Wear a fitted but comfortable top, such as a T-shirt or polo shirt. Avoid loose clothing that could get tangled in the riding equipment.
• Light jacket or hoodie: Depending on the weather, a light jacket or hoodie can be useful to protect you from wind or possible rain.
• Closed-toe shoes: Wear closed-toe shoes with a small heel, preferably riding boots or boots with good ankle support. Make sure they’re comfortable for walking.
• Riding helmet: Wearing a helmet is strongly recommended to ensure your safety. Most equestrian centers provide helmets, but you can bring your own if you have one.
• Accessories: Don’t forget sunglasses, sunscreen, and possibly a hat for sun protection. Also consider bringing a water bottle to stay hydrated during the ride.
